This reading is basically a rendering of American culture by an American anthropologist, who became weary of the exoticism of other cultures.  Thus, he place American culture under the magnifying class to demonstrate the problems of our desire to exoticize.  I use this reading in particular to show both my religion students and my humanities students the importance of cultural context and the need to understand different cultures rather than to exoticize them.  This is a good introductory exercise for both my religion and humanities courses.
